Vancouver police have shot a man they say was carrying a machete outside a SkyTrain station. Const. Jason Doucette says the shooting happened at the 29th Street SkyTrain station in east Vancouver.
Police said they initially tried to subdue the man, but he refused to drop the weapon. The suspect is in hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police say officers were helping transit officials at the time.
Passengers reported on social media that a man with a large knife or machete was threatening people, and police tried to get him to surrender. People then reported hearing a gunshot.
TransLink spokeswoman Anne Drennan said there is little information about the suspect.
“We have no information on his condition,” she said. “All I can tell you is we had a report of a man with a machete. We attended. VPD attended, and he got off the train and he was shot.”
Police have notified the Independent Investigations Office, a civilian-led body that responds to incidents of serious injury or death involving police officers.
